4 Visual Merchandising Trends Forecast 2020/21

Updated: May 29, 2019

It is always a pleasure to see the different concepts of displays filled in a retail place. WGSN has released four visual merchandising trends forecast 2020/21. Let’s take a close look at each one.

1. Code Create

The concept of ‘Code Create’ pursues a retro-futuristic aesthetic. An overall mood is mysterious and alluring by adopting mystical plays of light and liquid combined with rhythmical and repetitive designs. Props and fixtures of industrial and futuristic designs will be in trends. Surfaces are covered with stainless steel and radiant ombre colors. Also, opaque light projections and mapping techniques are used to illuminate a dark space. Lightweight materials are used, such as steel, aluminum, and precious metals.

2. Reconstructed Legacy

“Modern design that honors the past” is the description of ‘Reconstructed Legacy,” which is to reinterpret the legacy for the future. Retail places will be filled with vintage furniture and decors to create a 'newstalgia' mood. Elements from multiple eras and with bold colors are mixed and blocked, or patchworked surfaces are widely used. It is easy to find industrial materials such as mesh, concrete, and discarded stones. Also, crafted lighting designs with hand-blown glass and sculpted ceramics are used.

3. Technicality

‘Techtility’ represents a concept of the space between the real and virtual. An overall mood is a futuristic and tech-glam aesthetic. Morphed metallics and radiant sheens create dreamy, fantastic visuals, and blur boundaries between physical and digital. A soft glow of lights illuminates the space, and rows of strip lights give a rhythmical quality. Props and furniture have geometric or liquid-like surfaces with blurred boundaries. Primary materials consist of transparent or translucent elements, mesh structures, and metals.

4. Considered Comfort

‘Considered Comfort’ is the concept of exploring systems for living related to health and wellness. Retail places will continue to adopt soft and tactile materials of props and fixtures to create a warm and comfortable mood. Rounded or curved shapes and seamless or unobtrusive fixtures are good enough to build the mood. Also, soft lighting, meditative glow, sepia-toned lights help create comfort and opulence. It is a great idea to adopt raw, earthy materials such as marble and wood, and imperfect finishes because they look more refined and soft.
